As with many other New Zealand statistics, it is easy to make the assumption that palliative care is a high priority of a humane country. The truth is that their health care system does not have the funding to heal, cure or mitigate the progress of ailments that afflict its population. By the time they actually believe that something is seriously wrong with you and "find the funds" to supply you with advanced testing to see what is wrong with you, you are often too sick for them to justify paying out for treatment. Hence the money that is funnelled to hospice care. It is actually cheaper to give you pain medication and hire underpaid workers to hold your hand than to treat anything that might be wrong with you.
Most people who can afford it go private, knowing that reliance on the public system means a death sentence. Yet another well-kept secret.

Happy people in New Zealand? They don't tolerate negativity and if you suggest everything is not well in paradise, you'll be put on happy pills. That's why they're "happy".

Business-friendly? They make it cheap to start up a business. But they tax and red-tape you to death. Due to the huge "black" economy, there are plenty of workers happy to perform under the table for low wages and no rights for unreportable income.

Affordable? A figure obtained by comparing Auckland or Wellington to places like London, Tokyo and New York.

Safe? Again, a figure obtained by arranging the statistics into categories whose specificity is defined by a government dependent on foreign money.

There is a story behind every crowing New Zealand headline. Expat sites such as this one are where the stories can be found.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
